The Opium of the People...

 Transit lounge

Here we are now
Non-persons in a non-place
Non-residents on a non-return
Awaiting the next plane that takes us away
To be busy being somebody nowhere.

A day in transit is of itself a day in suspended animation-not where you come from and not where you are going to. A non-day in a non-place being a non-person. Fitting then that my lost weekend has occurred in Singapore, a place that seems to have lost itself as well. Sometimes when I arrive somewhere after a twelve hour flight and stumble into town bloated and semi-conscious the sense of place still plugs me back in. Singapore seems almost the opposite-like an anaesthetic that lets you drift in nothing until you leave. Its almost impossible to tell where you are. Sometimes, though not all the time, there is a sense of Asia but thats about it as far as the clues go. Beyond that its guesswork and oftentimes it feels like you never left the airport you departed from. It has a definite pulse, but one slowed to a trance catatonic by the landscape of retail therapy. All very soporific in its own way and if viewed whilst sonically numbed by an iPod the melee can be almost mediative. And the colours are fantastic.  But I have an uneasy feeling this is exactly what most of the world is starting to look like. That I am bothered by it is probably a sign of my own ageing. Nevertheless, I only have a small appetite for this particular sedative. Some of these photos were taken at Changi Airport, and some weren't. Make up your own mind-it won't matter much. Someone told me I would like Singapore- "the shops are fantastic, plus its a great place to travel from- the connections are fantastic."  I concur. Singapore is all this.

A world where no one is ever far from a screen.

Posh Paradise indeed.
